What is IOT Technology &
How it Works?

Feb, 2022

ORIGIN : 2021 Nowadays, the internet of things (IoT) is a trending topic and has lately developed as an embedded part of our everyday life. We are surrounded by it, anywhere we go, right from home appliances & automation to office gadgets, smart offices sensors, marketplaces CCTV’s with advanced technology, and fitness trackers its everywhere. Considering how much we use the Internet of Things term we thought it would be helpful to look at the origin. It starts not immediate with the inception of the internet but definitely with its support. The term “internet of things” was coined first in 1999 by Kevin Ashton, executive director of Auto-ID centre during working on a presentation for Procter & Gamble in the context of RFID supply chains.

He was the visionary technologist who played a breakthrough role in the IoT technology origin and technology development. IoT technology is growing rapidly despite increasing cyber security challenges. Its applications and solutions are guaranteed to continue to evolve in the years ahead, and in turn, they will change the way we live and work for the better. Read full article

What is Internet of the Things (IOT)?

As per I-Scoop, The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept that describes how the Internet will expand as sensors and intelligence are added to physical items such as consumer devices or physical assets and these objects are connected to the Internet. The vision and concept have existed for years; however, there has been an acceleration in the number and types of things that are being connected and in the technologies for identifying, sensing and communicating. These technologies are reaching critical mass and an economic tipping point over the next few years.

How it Works?

There are , 4 essential components of IoT system, which explains it how IoT works.

Sensors/ Devices
Sensors/ Devices

This is starting point also called as Perception Layer, where the Perception layer is where analogue signals get converted into digital data and vice versa. IoT sensors are small & work on little energy supply, it consists of probes, gauges, meters, and others to physical data, and convert them into electrical signals for IoT system. A sensor gathered all the small particulars from the surroundings. Even though the environment shows complexities, the IoT sensors pick up even the most sensitive changes.

Connectivity
Connectivity

The further step is to transfer collected data to the cloud infrastructure (also known as IoT platforms). To transfer the data, the communication devices like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, WAN, cellular networks, etc works as a medium. These mediums are all diverse and must be chosen sensibly for best results. Every medium combination we choose has shown conditions and adjustments between power consumption, range, and bandwidth. The efficiency of IoT results highly depend on the speed and accessibility of these mediums.

Data Processing
Data Processing

Once the data is collected at the cloud infrastructure, the software performs processing to be analysed so that the right action can be taken. This is a crucial process during the development of the IoT App This can range from very simple to very complex readings. The analysis can be as simple as checking the temperature of the AC or a complex one such as a situation where an intruder comes in and the device has to identify it through cameras. The IoT application is made such that it can process all the data at a fast rate to take immediate action.

User Interface
User Interface

At the final stage when the user is informed about the action with the help of a notification or an alert sound sent to the IoT mobile apps. This way the user will know that his command has been run through the systems. Also, a user sometimes might have an interface through which they can actively check in on their IoT system. It is a crucial part of IoT development. Depending on the IoT application and complexity of the system, the user may also be able to perform an action that may backfire and affect the system. It becomes essential for Internet of Things (IoT) app development companies to develop a system that can also be manually adjusted.
